Food Pantry Example #2

A few days ago, Karen left a comment asking me what kind of food we donate to the pantry. She mentioned her desire to share healthy foods. I absolutely agree.

Here's my take on this...

I will not donate anything that I would not have my own family eat, use, or wear. I also believe that all people entitled to a treat, whether they buy it at a store or receive it from the food pantry. That's why we donate things like Hershey Kisses. Every kid needs a surprise in their lunch box.

This photo was our February donation (I thought I had pictures of March, but I guess I didn't!). I didn't save the exact totals, but I remember this donation costing about $24. It was kind of a random mix. I know this was a good month for shampoo, soup, and cereal sales and coupons!

Last month was a big diaper (remember those Huggies coupons?!) and pasta month.

April looks like it's shaping up to be good for toiletries and coffee.

Bottom line, we like to share good stuff. I wouldn't serve my family a jar of yams, a box of Hamburger Helper, and Kool-Aid, so we don't give things like that to our neighbors, either.

24!?!?! I can't even begin to think how you did that! I try REALLY hard with the coupon thing, but I am sooo in over my head! (Which really sucks because right now, our budget needs me to be good at it!!!) You always amaze me with the amounts that you save!

You and your donations rock! Good couponing is a real skill that can be used to benefit those in need. You are certainly proof of that. I too, am very proud of what I am able to donate by matching up coupons and sales.

I totally agree with the spirit of your post. However, if I know an item is wanted by my local food pantry and we don't eat it, I'll look for a good deal/coupons for it to donate. Such as Spam. Seriously, that was the #1 item they said is never donated and what is wanted the most. We don't eat it, but I will get it on sale to donate. Same with canned greens. It was on "the list" of wanted items. I also donate boxed cakes and icing. Like you said, everyone deserves a treat, expecially on their birthday.

Sorry, my point was, that it is good to ask what they want. You might be suprised that what you would pass by is something another person requests.
