What we have NOT planned on is the important stuff- the legal stuff- the confusing, scary stuff. It's on our list of financial goals for 2009.
Tonight, I came across this post at Mommy Snacks- It's a promo code for free access to Suze Orman's Will & Trust Kit. We haven't gotten the chance to get through all of it (it's WAY comprehensive) but it looks darn good. Oh, and the code is only good until Saturday.
So if you're a Will & Trust slacker like I am, stop procrastinating and check out this website. We'll do it together.

Thanks Katy, this is great. Our first 2009 goal was to get life insurance... which we did (yay!). This is the next logical step we've yet to tackle, so it's very timely.
Strangely this is one of those things I did take care of when DS was born. We have a rather simple will since we don't have much.
We have a guardian for Gabe and what little life insurance there is going to that person (not enough for a trust even). I even have my cats (and any future pets) in the will so that they are taken care of.
I am so glad you posted this. A will is the most important thing next to life insurance once you have children. Especially if you want to specify who will take care of your children. Unless you have oodles of money & assets a simple will should be sufficient. I believe you don't have to get into estate planning until you have over 1.5 mil but don't quote me on that. Two other important documents are Power of Attorney and Health Care Proxy.
I'm a slacker on this! Once I had kids, I took an old will from 2003 (it was required to have one for my job at the time) and I just crossed out things and wrote things at the bottom and stuff. That's probably not legal or sane. Oops.
Becky it is really only an issue if you have specific people you want your kids to go to. Otherwise they could end up with someone you wouldn't want. Also if you think there may be fighting over them. Bottom line if anything happens to you and your husband everything will go to your children. The will just makes probate easier.
