Day 18: Help Me Out, People...

OK, I just sprayed my last squirt of counter cleaner. This is not a good thing. I have MESSY children.

I know it's possible and better to make my own cleaners. I dabbled with vinegar a few months ago, but switched back to the store bought stuff so I could use up what I had in the basement.

So now it's not even about what's better for us- I have no choice. I need to make some cleaner today. Here's what I have on hand- white vinegar, baking soda, I think some lavender oil... What do I do? The kitchen is constantly on the verge of being gross. I need to be prepared.

Sorry I can't help you out - I got like 8 spray bottles of cleaner though if you want one! I got most for practically free. It will take me 3 years to go through it all (although with a toddler using a toilet now, I'm going through a lot more!).

Anything to help the cause!

I can totally help you out...maybe. So over the past week I have found this site that has all sorts of recipes for homemade cleaning supplies (her goal is to get rid of all non-food items from her grocery budget). So here is a link to her laundry/cleaning supplies recipes.

I've used just diluted white vinegar - it doesn't smell too fabulous, but it does a good cleaning job on all sorts of surfaces. Or, Jonah Lisa at the Toby Show has had some good posts on green cleaning... here is her "Basic Arsenal" recipes:

I think you're good to go! Baking soda and vinegar are KEY in making your own cleaners. Check out this website (http://all-abode.com/) or check out the book Clean Home, Clean Planet at the library, it's amazing. (http://www.amazon.com/Clean-House-Planet-Karen-Logan/dp/0671535951/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product).

Good luck!!!

hey Katy, I take a basin, fill with some hot water, and squirt a little dish soap (like Dawn) to wipe down my counter tops (and most anything). I try to reserve store bought cleansers like my fav Lysol pourable for rare occassions...cheaper and eliminates unecessary chemicals. The dish soap trick also lends a nice shine to chrome fixtures and such. HTH.

I don't use any recipes. I just mix 1/4 - 1/3 vinegar to water in a spray bottle. I sometimes add a few drops of Lavendar Tree Tea Oil. I spray on counters, tile floors (w/Method O-Mop from Target), sinks, tubs, toilets, etc. I also use baking soda for scum & stains w/a bit of water to make a paste. Esp for tubs. I use either vinegar or baking soda for toilet bowls too.
