Day 10: Trying Not to Waste a Single Thing

My neighbor dropped by with a big cooked chicken for us last night. I guess a friend had made it for her, but she was only hungry for a little bit. So she cut off a tiny bite and brought the rest to us.

I mentioned in my BJs post about my wimpiness around chicken parts... Let me tell ya, I have a history with whole chickens- and it's not a good one. I won't go into details for fear of potential post traumatic stress, but I'll just say the terrible event involved me, what I perceived to be a chicken neck, and a guts bag. Oh, and my very insensitive sister via telephone. Oh, and a few tears. OK, enough said.

Anyhow, being tight with food this month, I gratefully accepted the gift and took all of the meat off, turning it into three chicken pot pies- one for dinner, one for the freezer, and one for my neighbor.

Then, I was faced with my biggest fear. The carcass. BLECH.

In the spirit of not wasting, I googled recipes for chicken stock. I am down to my last box anyway. I found this very doable post on A Year of CrockPotting. So I did it. The nasty chicken remains are simmering in the crock pot as I type. I'm trying not to think too much about it. YUCK.

But hey, I did not waste a thing.

Oh, the chicken pot pies were good. I used the chicken, all of the root vegetables from my CSA box, and two cans of cream of chicken soup.
