Fun and free (or pretty cheap)

So it's Memorial Day weekend. Sweet! A long weekend, time on our hands, and not much money in the old pockets.

Whatever.

Over the past few weeks, the kids and I have been having plenty of fun- and not spending a whole lot in the process.

Here's what we've been up to (keep in mind, my son is 2.5 years old):

1. Visit to the Fire Station. FREE.
We did this with our playgroup friends. A mom from the group made a call, and a few days later, 12 or 13 toddlers were sitting in the fire truck, checking out the helmets an hoses, and holding their ears while the siren bared. It rocked.

2. Public Transportation. $1-$6.
Public transportation isn't just for getting around anymore. The bus, train, and commuter boat are a morning out for this family. We don't always have a destination, sometimes we just get on and ride- because that's the fun part, right?

3. Construction Site. FREE.
I'm not kidding when I say that last week, the kids and I sat on the sidewalk for an HOUR watching 4 giant excavators demolish and clear our city's old high school. Tyler said over and over that it was his "lucky day."

4. Playgrounds. FREE.
Enough said.

5. The Library. FREE.
How rad is it that the library lets you hang out and borrow their stuff for free? Most of them have super story hours, too!

6. Visit to the Pet Store. FREE.
Both of my kids love this- we go on rainy days. We take time to visit each and every animal. My baby girl loves the albino snake (I know...).

So what does your family do for free or super cheap fun? Leave your ideas in the comments section, because I'm always looking for some new ones!

Hey, Katy. I, too am a fan of everything FREE (or at least CHEAP!) I just did a post on cheap activities for the summer... I'll probably be adding your ideas to the list.

My husband's old company is demolishing that building! He's always over there talking. Cool stuff.

We have been doing a lot of geocaching. If you have a handheld GPS, the kids love it. We spent four hours today looking for "buried treasure".

While the GPS wasn't free, the actual treasure hunting is.

We're big fans of the train table at Barnes & Noble. Between that and the books we can spend a whole morning there.

Our library has passes for free or reduced admission at some local museums (kid-friendly). The local recycling plant has an educational center attached to it and that is free too. Very fun for preschool boys!
