I am super thrifty about groceries. I don't care what kind of shampoo we use, I'm not phased by crunchy toilet paper. But there are some things that I have no problem spending a bit more money on.
One is milk. We spend about twice as much as we would if we bought a gallon at the store. However, I like having local milk delivered in a little truck. I like that it comes in neat-o glass bottles. I like that I know it's not full of antibiotics and growth hormones and crap.
So what it your splurge in the budget?

I am learning to be less 'high maintenance' (just this week I switched over from salon hair products to store-bought Loreal). A BIG deal for me. I totally agree on the milk - I buy local milk, cheese, and eggs. Here are the splurges I don't foresee being able to give up(though I am learning to be brand flexible):
toilet paper - mostly at my husband's request. He likes good ole Charmin. I did just buy Cottonelle b/c slightly cheaper...
decent laundry detergent - we don't buy a lot of clothes so I have to keep the ones we have looking, smelling nice. I just like the way the better brands smell/work. I used to be a TIDE girl and have downgraded to Cheer, Gain, or ALL depending on sales/coupons. I also dilute EVERYTHING to make it go further.
quality meats and produce - I buy these items at a smaller market b/c, though pricier, they are better in quality. However, we buy modest cuts of meats and only produce that is in-season.
Essentially, if I have to pay more to have less additives, artifical, etc....I do.
I buy straws. Yeah yeah, they are only like $1.50 for 100 of them, and I don't neeed them, I just want/love them and think they make drinks taste better. Anytime I run out of milk I always look at the straws and feel a tinge of guilt :) And then more practical, I buy name brand tampons 'cause to me that is not an area to mess with.
Take out. For sure. Like when we "order pizza" - we don't just get the $9 cheese pizza which would be fine. We have to get the toppings, breadsticks & chicken wings. Chinese food - forget about it. $30 easily on boneless spareribs, crab ragoons and egg rolls.
We'll spend more on one night's worth of take-out than I do on dinner-at-home the entire week. It's sad.
I think I splurge on my haircuts too. You wouldn't know since I throw my hair in an up-do everday. After tip, it's def. more than a week's worth of groceries.
I spend more on milk too. I have been buying the organic kind.
My biggest splurge in the grocery store is Bounty Paper Towels...although I always have a coupon for them. I just don't feel that the others really live up.
Outside of the grocery stores, my biggest splurge is running shoes. I am usually not a name brand person but I love Nike clothes but their shoes aren't for me. I wear Asics. I always try to find them on sale but it doesn't always work.
It is hard for me not to shop for a bargain. It was just the way I was raised and it is almost like a game now. How much can we save :-)
We just moved into a new house in a hard hit area where a lot of the businesses are closing. Sad for them but bonus for us. We saved so much money outfitting the house! I am talking $2k saving on the china cabinet, $2,500 savings on the entire bedroom set, and so much more.
What is cool is that my husband is in on it too. He isn't so much into the grocery savings or things like that but the bigger items he gets excited about saving money too :-)
I just like to steal things from your basement stash. I will splurge on my friend named Mike. But he brings 5 of his friends who are really nice, too!
I buy organic meat, poultry and dairy, and it gets REALLY expensive. It's the reason I am trying to use coupons and bargain shop. Otherwise, it just wouldn't be possible. Sometimes I think I'm a nut trying to get an extra $.50 off a box of cereal, and then paying $12 for one pork loin, but whatever :)
Diaper Balm - I drive to Neiman Marcus and buy a $14 tube of Bobbi Brown Diaper Balm. It clears up my Punkinhead's red tushie in like, minutes. Totally worth the splurge.
The only other purchase I've ever made at Neiman's was for a wedding gift for a very posh friend that registered there.
Organic raisins. Plump, not sticky & yummy!
